Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has always been a major hub for airline travel in south-east Asia, and with the advent of local budget airlines such as Air Asia its strategic location at the centre of numerous international routes has made it even busier than it was a decade ago. As an important transit stop for travellers on long-haul flights, Kuala Lumpur also boasts numerous good accommodation options, many which cater to those who are journeying on a budget. Affiliated with Air Asia, one of the most popular budget hotel chains that has sprung up over recent years is Tuna Hotels. On a recent journey, I stayed over at one of Tuna’s hotels at Kuala Lumpur’s KLIA2 terminal, during a brief stopover in the city.

The concept behind the Tune Hotel chain is ingenious. How often have you wanted to rest while stopping briefly in a city, en route for another destination? Often the only option is to stay a few hours in a pricey airport hotel, or to journey an hour or more into the city, leaving you less time to rest and prepare for the next leg of your journey. Tune Hotels provide an option to these common dilemmas by offering travellers 5-star quality accommodation, albeit a budget price. To do this, many of the unnecessary extras of hotel accommodation have been ditched including air conditioning, television and toiletries, many of which we never use – especially if we’re exhausted after a long-haul flight and just want to sleep.

My experience at the Kuala Lumpur’s Tune Hotel at KLIA was excellent, as will be described in the following paragraphs. After spending most of the night before my departure packing, I’d left Perth on an early-morning flight and was totally exhausted when I boarded my flight. Although I rested a little on the plane, I was very still very tired when we touched down in Kuala Lumpur and feeling relieved that I’d booked into hotel accommodation so I could rest before connecting with my next flight late that evening. Since I was only in transit for ten hours I didn’t want to travel all the way into the city and therefore the Tune Hotel seemed like the perfect option. I wasn’t disappointed.

The Tune Hotel at Kuala Lumpur’s KLIA2 terminal is very easily accessible for air travellers. The terminal is adjacent to the Gateway, a modern shopping and entertainment complex, and by following the signs and asking friendly locals, you can effortlessly find your way there. Although it’s a bit of a walk, the hotel is connected to the Gateway by a covered walkway, meaning that you don’t need to take a bus or taxi to get there - thus saving even more money.

My first impression of this brand new hotel was very favourable. The décor in the reception was bright and contemporary, and the staff were friendly and efficient, quickly processing my booking and sending me off to my room. The reception was spacious and welcoming, with plenty of comfortable seating and a coffee shop, for those craving refreshments.

Similarly, although my room was relatively small, it had a spacious feel to it due to the well thought-out design plan and modern, minimalistic furnishings. Since I was travelling alone and all I wanted to do was sleep, this was certainly not a problem for me. Despite its status as a ‘no-frills’ hotel, I found that this hotel had all the facilities that one might desire on a brief stop-over. The beds were comfy, the en suite bathroom (although quite small) was clean and functional, there was a writing desk and a television was available for those desiring entertainment. Considering the budget price I was paying, I was extremely impressed.

Various types of rooms are available at this hotel, including double rooms, twin rooms and a few family rooms. Other facilities include a car park, luggage storage, laundry service, safety deposit boxes and complementary Wi-fi.

In a nutshell, if you’re travelling through Kuala Lumpur and are wanting a safe, comfy spot to crash out during your transit or before a late-night departure, then I strongly recommend this modern budget hotel. Although it’s not somewhere you’d stay long-term during a holiday, it fulfils its function of providing comfortable and convenient accommodation for budget-conscious visitors to Malaysia perfectly.
