Surrounded by idyllic green farming land and rugged mountain ranges, it would be difficult to find a more perfect spot for a weekend getaway than Glenmack Park in the beautiful Kangaroo Valley, just two hour’s drive south of Sydney. Reputed to be Australia’s most beautiful valley, Kangaroo Valley is a popular destination for exhausted city-slickers to retreat to for hiking, rock-climbing, kayaking, relaxing or to enjoy some retail therapy at the various boutiques and galleries that are scattered here and there. Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat or a school holiday adventure, Glenmack Park is a great accommodation choice for visitors. Situated on the edge of picturesque Kangaroo Valley village, the views are breathtaking and the fresh country air invigorating to the senses. In addition the park is just a five-minute walk into town, where you can leisurely peruse the galleries, shops, cafes and local markets.

Facilities at Glenmack are first-rate, and the park offers a great range of accommodation options and other facilities for travellers. Campers will love the beautiful grassy area, close to a small lake, which has been allocated for their use. It’s non-powered, but I’ve never found this to be a problem on our family camping holidays, provided you have your own equipment. For those who want to prepare their own meals, the park management has provided a very well-stocked camp kitchen. Pet-owners will also be glad to know that their four-legged friends are very welcome at Glenrock, solving a common dilemma faced during holiday periods. Part of the magic of camping is building a campfire (and perhaps trying to cook over it), and fortunately these are allowed in the park if you have your own brazier or fire bin. Naturally, camping is the most budget-conscious accommodation option at Glenmack so even if you’re a cash-strapped student wanting to connect with nature for a few days, the prices are competitive, making this an affordable holiday choice.

Powered sites are also available for visitors travelling in caravans, campervans and motor homes, enabling you to enjoy most of the facilities of home while you’re on the road. The mood of the park is relaxed and friendly, so it’s a great place to make new friends. Travellers have the choice of parking either directly on the grassy lawns or on special concrete slabs, constructed especially for the purpose. Clean and well-appointed ablution blocks are also available for visitors.

For those who don’t have their own portable accommodation, or simply desire greater comfort when visiting Kangaroo Valley, Glenmack Park also offers several varieties of cabin accommodation ranging from budget cabins to deluxe en suite villas with two bedrooms. This is especially welcome for elderly visitors or during the winter, when the weather can get extremely chilly.

When we visited last winter with my elderly mother we chose the deluxe option, which was perfect for us. The villa had an open-plan design, with the kitchen situated at one end of the living room, making it a very social arrangement, perfect for a family holiday. Although the weather outside was rather cold, the heating was great, and we were all very cosy. As we were preparing all our own meals it was essential that we had good cooking facilities, and the villa’s kitchen was spacious with all the things we needed. There was also a small balcony with outdoor furniture situated at the back of the villa. Although we didn’t make use of this due to the cold weather, during the warmer months it would be a priceless addition, allowing visitors to fully relish the spectacular scenery surrounding the park. Finally, another essential feature for us was the bathroom, and this was attractive and spotlessly clean.

Apart from the practical amenities that the park provides, it’s also a very family-friendly spot. Children are welcome to meet the park’s pets which include and horse, pony and some very tame goats. There is also a small payground that will keep them active and entertained.

Whether you’re an active family, hiking enthusiast or a simply want to chill out, the park offers an incomparable range of accommodation options that will suit all budgets.
