This is the perfect mountain escape right in the center of Queensland's fertile Granite Belt. There are two basic cottages to choose from, each surrounded by flower gardens and fruit trees.
Briar Rose Cottages are located in the country town of Stanthorpe, about three hours drive south west of Brisbane, just off the New England Highway.
The outdoor courtyard
The "back cottage" accommodates one couple, is self contained and has a traditional wood stove. It has a small upstairs verandah with views across the surrounding countryside. The "front cottage" accommodates two couples or a family of four, is self contained with a wood stove, and has a lovely outdoor courtyard area for afternoon tea. It can snow in Stanthorpe during winter, so rest assured those wood stoves will definitely come in handy. One night in Briar Rose Cottages costs around $140 - $215 depending on your choice of accommodation.
The front verandah
We stayed overnight in the colonial style "front cottage" and made the most of the swinging seat on the front verandah, lazing away and reading as the day passed by. We also walked into Stanthorpe to take the kids to the excellent riverside park, which had a fun "Brass Monkey" theme. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to visit in town as well, or you might like to follow one of the informative tourist drives in the area. Be sure to visit the many orchard and vineyards nearby to make some cellar door purchases as well.
